Frequently Asked Questions
-
It’s an evaluation for transgender or gender-diverse individuals seeking Gender-Affirming Medical and Surgical Treatment (GAMST) to align their body with their gender identity.
-
The assessment evaluates gender incongruence, checks for mental health concerns, provides information on GAMSTs, and helps individuals consider the risks, effects, and outcomes of the treatment. It also assesses decision-making, understanding, and expectations while offering recommendations to improve outcomes.
-
Results reflect the individual’s readiness at the time of the evaluation and cannot predict future readiness.
If the surgery is scheduled far in the future, an updated evaluation may be needed.
Recommendations may change if new information arises, and the provider will inform the individual promptly.
-
The process differs for clients meeting the provider for the first time versus those already in therapy. Assessments may take more than one or two visits, depending on factors like your relationship with the provider, the type of surgery requested, and any concerns from the initial visit. Think of the assessment as an extension of the intake, focusing on your history, decision-making, and readiness for surgery, not as a therapy session. Once complete, the provider will write a formal letter or report based on the evaluation, your history, and medical records. This will be sent to your medical providers. You can also request a copy of the letter for your records.
