Group Therapy

Finding Your Best Self

The purpose of this group is to support participants in moving toward their “best self”—the person they hope to become—and away from their “worst self,” or the version of themselves they fear becoming. The group also focuses on restoring hope that meaningful change is possible, particularly for individuals with trauma histories or ongoing emotional pain.

This group may be a good fit for individuals who have previously completed Seeking Safety and are looking for a next step, as well as for anyone interested in personal growth within a mental health framework or who enjoys self-help–style reading. Participation requires the purchase of a $15 book, with approximately five pages of reading per week. The material is interactive, accessible, and grounded in real-life stories. Copies are also widely available through local libraries.

The group will be structured but will function similarly to a book club. Participants will agree on a chapter to read in advance, choosing from 35 available options. Sample chapter themes include social pain and the trauma of otherness; the relationship between body and biology and the impact of trauma; self-forgiveness; how people change; motivation; using imagination as a tool for healing; the culture of silence (including experiences of being unseen or holding limited social power); and coping with difficult emotions such as rage, hatred, and desires for revenge.
